In London homes, space is everything. Alcoves beside a chimney breast, recesses under a staircase, or the awkward wall at the end of a hallway — these are not limitations, they are opportunities. With the right carpentry, they become some of the most useful and beautiful parts of a home.
Why bespoke shelving outperforms off-the-shelf
Flat-pack shelving units from retail stores are designed to fit the average room — which means they rarely fit yours perfectly. There is always a gap at the top, a space at the side, or a height that does not quite work for what you need. Bespoke shelving is built to your exact dimensions, so it fills the space completely and feels as though it was always there.
Beyond fit, the quality difference is substantial. Bespoke units from KGK Interiors are built from solid timber or high-grade MDF, with properly engineered joints and a finish that is applied in situ for a seamless result. A good bespoke unit will outlast a flat-pack equivalent many times over.
What can be done with an alcove?
Alcoves are the most common request we receive for shelving work. In a typical Victorian or Edwardian property, there are two alcoves flanking the chimney breast in the reception room. These spaces are most effectively used with a combination of open shelving above and closed cabinets below — giving you display space and hidden storage in one unit.
Variations include: full-height open shelving for books or display, integrated desking for a home office alcove, TV media units with cable management built in, and children's room storage with integrated lighting.
Under-stair storage
The space beneath a staircase is often completely wasted. Depending on the configuration, it can be converted into a fitted cupboard, a set of pull-out drawers, open shelving, or even a compact home office. At KGK Interiors, we have converted under-stair spaces across South West London into some of our clients' favourite features of their homes.
What affects the price of bespoke shelving?
The main factors are the size of the space, the complexity of the design (open shelving is simpler than units with doors and drawers), the material specified, and the finish. Painted MDF is cost-effective and looks excellent when done well. Solid oak or walnut commands a higher price but brings a warmth and quality that painted finishes cannot fully replicate.
KGK Interiors tip: If budget is a consideration, a hybrid approach works well — solid timber shelves with a painted MDF carcass gives you the look and feel of quality where it matters most, at a more accessible price point.
How to get started
The first step is a site visit. We will look at the space, discuss how you want to use it, and talk through the design options that work best for both the room and your budget. From there, we produce a detailed proposal before any work begins.
KGK Interiors works across South West London and Surrey. If you have a space you are not making the most of, we would love to help you change that.
